7. Drive - The Elevator

Warrior Tom Hardy
FilmDistrict

Nicolas Winding Refn doused audiences in gallons of cool with this slick neo-noire, as the nameless driver stoically drifted his way through the crime-ridden streets of Los Angeles. Following his set of stringent rules, Driver’s run in with trouble is what left the coolest impression.

With his life spiralling out of control, Driver proposes a life together with his neighbour/love-interest Irene as they wait on the elevator. Upon entering, Driver realises that the other inhabitant of the small cube, is a goon sent to pick him off. With his violent life making its way to Irene, Drive gently pulls her aside, quietly kissing her as she stares at him longingly. With the clench of a jaw, he bursts into action throwing the assailant to the ground, where he repeatedly stomps on his head before it bursts.

Placing Driver between a rock and a hard place, he is forced to chose between life and love. He must protect Irene from the gun-toting man, but by doing so he will drive her away. It is one of the many references to the “Scorpion and The Frog” fable which is hidden throughout the film – and rather obviously placed on Driver’s iconic golden jacket. As Irene backs out of the elevator, in complete shock, Driver looks on regretfully, knowing he will never see her again.
