One of the most notoriously troubled productions in Hollywood history, the arduous journey of bringing Superman to the big screen is the stuff of legend. Despite going both massively over-schedule and over-budget, by the time it hit theaters audiences still truly believed that a man could fly.

Along with the release of Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind the previous year, Richard Donner's superhero movie is credited with popularizing the rise of effects-heavy genre films during the 1980's thanks to its groundbreaking visual effects unlike anything that had been seen on the big screen before, that ultimately earned the production an honorary Academy Award.

As the most expensive movie ever made at the time, there was a lot riding on Superman's potential success. Thankfully for everyone involved, it was a critical and commercial smash hit and almost 40 years later is still lauded as one of the most influential and revered comic book movies in history.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
