4. Lots And Lots Of Double Layered Jokes - Shrek (2001)

Lion King - Inappropriate
DreamWorks Pictures

It's about time we took a good, hard look at the enigma that is Dreamworks' Shrek.

When you think about it, nothing about Shrek should work. It's a blatant parody of many of our favourite fairytales, voiced by a cast largely made up of actors who had little, if anything, to do with children's films in their careers prior.

And yet, here it stands, a seminal piece of work in family entertainment.

Shrek was unafraid to push the boat out on the "family" part of that - there really are a lot of gags in here really aimed at the parents. Whether it's Lord Farquaad's name (which is a homophone for "f*ckwad, if you hadn't caught on) or the endless jokes about Donkey being an ass, there's stuff across the whole franchise that it'd take a few years for the younger audience to eventually catch up on.

But look beyond the willy jokes or rude language, and there's a darker street to Lord Farquaad's villainous character. Let's not forget that he literally tortures the Gingerbread Man. He waterboards - or rather, milkboards - him, and tears his legs off and crumbles one right in front of him.

Sure, Gingey is just a biscuit, so who knows if he would have felt anything, or just become incapacitated and soggy. He does also eventually get replacement legs baked and iced back on, too. But does that really make it any less horrfying? I'm not so sure.
