Tilman Singer's Cuckoo is a ferociously unique genre entry, starring Hunter Schafer as teenager Gretchen, who moves to the German Alps to live with her father (Marton Csokas), only to encounter increasingly bizarre phenomena linked to her father's boss (Dan Stevens).

This is another horror film you're better off watching without being tipped off about precisely what it is, because Cuckoo certainly goes in some left-field, wildly unexpected directions. But from its bleakly beautiful setting to its excellent cast and the sheer head-spinning nature of its plot, Cuckoo is a sensory assault of aggressive weirdness that basically wants to make you uncomfortable from first minute to last.

Credit to Schafer and Stevens for preventing the picture from unspooling during even its more unwieldy moments. And for open-minded horror fans keen to dive down one very twisted rabbit hole, Cuckoo provides some mighty, unforgettable rewards.
