The message that this touching scene from what is a fantastic film has never been more relevant than it is today. Whilst Shawshank is a Hollywood glossing of an age old message it can easily be transferred to everyday life, particularly with the economic difficulties faced by so many around the world. The moment when Andy Dufresne crawls through the sewage system and comes out the other side a free man, the rain washing away the foulness he had just crawled through is such a great metaphor for the struggles that hardship bring and the unbridled joy of seeing all your hard work and perseverance pay off. As far as scenes go, this is right up there with the most inspirational of them, however the image alone of Andy Dufresne reaching to the heavens is perhaps one of the most inspirational images in cinematic history.
