10 Most Intriguing Short Films Of 2015 (So Far)

2. Romance in NYC

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9utEs6Ki4Q Tristan Pope€™s award-winning seventeen-minute short is a lyrical, deeply affecting film intent on capturing the nuances of the relationship of a couple in love. Set in the iconic environs of New York City and starring Rachael McOwen, Romance In NYC was filmed entirely using an iPhone 6 (assisted by a few bells and whistles, but fundamentally just with the smartphone itself). It€™s a beautiful, elegant piece of work, filmed from the point of view of the boyfriend €“ the iPhone€™s camera becomes the direction and the focus of his gaze, framing the dozens upon dozens of tiny little moments of intimacy and affection that characterise their life together. Pope used a filmmaking app called MoviePro to piece together Romance In NYC, even going so far as to contact the developers with feedback and ideas as to how to improve it €“ those ideas have now been incorporated into the app available to the public on the App Store, making our Mr. Pope a technical innovator as well as a damn fine filmmaker. Romance In NYC is a masterclass in maximising the potential of your budget and equipment. Pope deliberately limits himself to create a lo-fi, authentic vibe that could easily have been lost with the use of more film-specific cameras. It€™s been travelling the festival circuit this year, garnering significant praise: the film won an award at the New Media Film Festival this year.
