5. The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
The Poseidon Adventure is a decent enough movie, but not one of my favorites. On the other hand, after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and resulting tsunami (I really hate that word for some reason), we can probably all relate to the terror of ship being hit by a 60-foot wave caused by an undersea earthquake. Add in the fact that this earthquake occurs on New Year's Eve and you have the makings of a movie that makes my prestigious list of NYE films. Besides, it's hard to go wrong with an adventure flick starring Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Roddy McDowell, Shelley Winters, and Leslie Nielsen. Most Memorable NYE Scene It's hard to give a most memorable moment here; most of the film occurs on New Year's Eve. I suppose if I had to choose a moment, I might go with the capsizing of the SS Poseidon by that monster wave. Every time I visit the coast of Oregon I worry about a massive wave striking the mainland. That worry would be greatly magnified on a ship at sea.
