A masterpiece of a film, Danny Boyle’s 2002 apocalypse flick has gone on to influence a lot of media over the years. Its opening is one of its most famous scenes, so much so that people became rather suspicious when the first issue of The Walking Dead was released with an incredibly similar bit.

For those that still haven’t seen it (you’ve been missing out), it opens firstly with a lab incident that results in an infected chimpanzee going mental. 28 days after this monkey-centric mistake, protagonist Jim wakes up in hospital with not a person nor a chimp in sight.

The sequence in which he slowly navigates the new, empty world is one for the ages. He roams the streets in his hospital gown, finding missing posters plastered one atop the other and other signs of a catastrophe that he has completely slept through.

Seeing the streets of London completely empty just feels wrong, with the busiest city in the UK appearing completely silent save for the papers blowing across the tarmac. Imagine the absolute scenes of going into hospital, only for your biggest problem not to be a scary operation but instead waking up to an apparently dead world. Creepy stuff.
