9. Garbage Misrepresented
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QM2f5VksNU The Film: The Gallows What It Promised: A proper bone-chiller aided by an effortlessly unsettling tone and visual pallet. What It Actually Was: It is hard to deny just how effective this teaser trailer (which predominantly served as the principal showpiece) for Blumhouse's horror The Gallows is. Rendered by a deeply menacing atmosphere, taut and progressive imagery, and an impending sense of dread which culminates in something pretty arresting visually and audibly. It was a rare trailer for a modern genre flick that looked both promising and contextually unique. Thing is though, it was far from either of those things. The final product was actually an incredibly tedious, often idiotic found-footage movie that constantly broke the rules of this recurring - and usually awful - sub-genre. Whilst the teaser does suggest minimal use of personal cameras; namely when she appears in close up, there is very little here to truly expose the visual craft. It actually looks like a teeth-chattering art-house flick, not a head-slapping, recycled stinker.
