10 Most Nightmarish Horror Movie Monsters

4. The Crawlers - The Descent

As if intense claustrophobia wasn't enough already, the potholers of Neil Marshall's The Descent also have to contend with a race of mutant cannibal nudists out for their blood. Adventurer Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) and her chums are no pushovers, but they barely stand a chance at the mercy of these subterranean monsters.

From the moment they're introduced, these primal nightmares turn this tense, atmospheric horror film into a work of sheer terror straight out of an Alien movie. Creeping, crawling and lurking in the darkness, that they're only glimpsed in brief shots makes them even more terrifying. Somehow, Sarah manages to survive the night, fighting her way past the bloodthirsty mutants, to freedom...

Or does she? Depending on which cut you saw (differing in the US and UK), Sarah either escaped or died down there, hallucinating in the dark among the monsters. Whatever the case, ignore the sequel, a diminishing return if ever there was one.
