10 Most Outrageous Oscar Snubs
4. Tarzan (Best Song - Phil Collins)
Oftentimes, even the biggest Oscar enthusiast will get a little tired of reading the nominations after they get past Best Screenplay or so. The Original Song awards can often go unheralded, which is a shame, because tunes from movies like The Lion King and Philadelphia are nothing short of modern classics. Other times, the award is given to Phil Collins.
Picking up the prize for his Tarzan song You'll Be In My Heart, Oscar winner Phil Collins (as we must call him) defeated fellow musicians Randy Newman and Aimee Mann, whose respective songs for Toy Story 2 and Magnolia would surely be worthier winners.
More egregiously, however, he won the award that was surely destined for South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Blame Canada, the catchy centrepiece of the greatest film musical of all time (it is), was performed (with gusto) by the late Robin Williams at the ceremony. It features absolutely no appearances whatsoever from former Genesis drummer Phil Collins – and yet it still didn't win.
As is their want, the South Park staff proceeded to mock Collins on their show, portraying him as a boastful oaf. We wouldn't normally wish to celebrate poor sportsmanship – but on this occasion, it seems more than justified.
