Pride is one of those films that prove that truth is definitely stranger than fiction. A group of gay and lesbian activists from London donate their time and resources to help a struggling Welsh mining village. Couldn't make it up, could you? But this remarkable tale did actually happen. Perhaps the most amazing thing about it is that it took nearly thirty years for it to make the transition to the big screen. The film was a hit with festival audiences (it received a standing ovation and Queer Palm award at Cannes) and those who saw it in UK cinemas but the film proved controversial when released in America. When ratings board the MPAA decided to give Pride an R rating, essentially stopping anyone under the age of seventeen from seeing it unless they were accompanied by an adult, there was outcry. Some accused the board of being homophobic, since there was no sexual or violent content in the film that would warrant the rating. The film was rated 15 in the UK. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZfFvsKDuUU Pride is a rousing film that will have you pumping your first in the air by the end, regardless of your politics. A real crowd-pleaser, Pride was one of the most uplifting films of the year without reducing itself to sentimentality. It was also really, really funny. Like, really funny. See it today.
