Although it came out in American cinemas last year, we brits only saw this, the emotional debut feature from director Ryan Coogler, a year later. It was worth the wait. The film shows the true life story of the events leading to the death of Oscar Grant, who was killed by a police officer at a train station in Oakland, California. It is a powerful film that is regrettably topical, given the shooting of Trayvon Martin in 2012 and subsequent cases of police brutality and civil unrest in America. Michael B. Jordan, who could and perhaps should have been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, gives an amazing performance as Oscar. Fruitvale Station chooses to forgo sensationalism and the story unfolds in a natural and unremarkable matter. Of course, knowing how the story ends there is a constant sense of foreboding and dread when watching it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crMTGCCui5c
