6. Cujo

Children Of The Corn
Warner Bros.

In 1981, Stephen King published a novel centring around a murderous Saint Bernard called Cujo. The book sold well, urging Warner Bros to buy the rights for the story and release a film adaptation two years later.

At first, the idea of a killer Saint Bernard may not sound that scary. Despite the canine's immense size, this breed is extremely tame. You're more likely to be mauled to death by a chihuahua or a dachshund than one of these loveable mutts. But after the titular character becomes infected with rabies, the adorable dog becomes a savage, driven purely by bloodlust.

Even though many people who watched Cujo back in the day probably have memories of being frightened by the ravenous beast, the film hasn't aged well. When Cujo is drenched in blood and foam, he still looks too cute to come across as scary. Because the five Saint Bernards portraying Cujo didn't look frightening, they were swapped out in certain scenes with a Rottweiler, an animatronic, and a human in a dog costume. Since the dog outfit and animatronic look unconvincing, the scenes that are meant to be scary end up being unintentionally hilarious.
