Killer Klowns from Outer Space is about... well... the title says it all. After clown-like aliens begin terrorising a rural town, the civilians rise up to put a stop to the extra-terrestrial threat.

Fans of this slapstick horror defend it by saying 'Killer Klowns from Outer Space is not meant to be taken seriously' or 'It's supposed to be bad'.

But that's not true. Killer Klowns from Outer Space isn't supposed to be bad; it's supposed to be satirical. Some spoofs like Shaun of the Dead and Black Dynamite poke fun at themselves brilliantly, but satires like Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Sharknado, or, in this case, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, struggle to balance comedy with horror.

You can argue that the dialogue and acting is intentionally stupid but that seems like a lazy excuse. The Cabin in the Woods, What We Do in the Shadows, and Shaun of the Dead have tight scripts, solid performances, and sympathetic characters despite being parodical and self-referential.

Ironically, the movie could've worked better if it tried to be scary since the clown costumes are deeply unnerving.
