10 Most Overrated Movies On IMDb's Top 250

7. Dangal (#80)

Coco Pixar
Disney

There’s a fair chance you’ve never heard of this movie. It’s a 2016 Bollywood film that didn’t see much of a wide release outside of Asia, and is about a family of wrestlers working to compete at the Commonwealth Games while facing misogyny directed at the daughters, who want to be India’s first world-class female wrestlers.

It’s the highest-grossing Indian film of all time, and won multiple awards in India and China (where it was also released). But is it really deserving of a spot on the top 250 films ever made?

IMDb has a bit of a history with Indian movies. After multiple Indian films were shooting to the number one spot on the top 250 due to the sheer volume of 10/10 votes from India’s massive population and notoriously rabid Bollywood fans, IMDb moved Indian cinema and TV to its own category. Dangal, then, might have been the one to slip through the cracks - vote brigaded by fans, it’s made its way into the top 250 unnoticed, but the film was not exempt from some heavy criticism.

The presentation of feminism in the film is pretty flawed, showing all the women’s successes as a result of male intervention, and there’s a late-game twist that reduces a compelling character into a flat caricature. Dangal may be a good movie, but one of the greatest of all time? Not quite.
