6. Coco (#69)

Coco Pixar
Pixar

Pixar is one of the best animation companies around, having single-handedly kickstarted the 3D animation revolution. They’re responsible for all-time classics like Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Up and Inside Out, but they’ve also fallen victim to cliché and the sweet allure of merchandising with Cars and the infamously ‘meh’ Pixar sequels like Monsters University and Finding Dory.

And while Coco is a new property, and while it has some gorgeous visuals and great concepts, it’s a bit overhyped, and is destined to end up in the ‘meh’ category when some time has passed.

Coco is plagued by cliché from beginning to end. From the moment Miguel ends up in the Land of the Dead, every major story beat is easy to guess, and the film has to rely on its humour and visuals to keep it going. While those aspects are great, all the moments that are meant to have an impact - like the reveal of de la Cruz’s betrayal - lose a lot of their power.

And although the tearjerker scene at the very end with Coco is undoubtedly a good one, it’s definitely not quite as impactful as other Pixar heartwrenchers like the ending of Toy Story 3 and Up’s opening scene, which have more profound effects because of the universal stories they tell. If only Coco could break away from its clichés, it could have been something great, but now it’s just overrated.
