7. Gwyneth Paltrow – Pepper Potts

Pepper Potts is to Tony Stark what salt is to, well, pepper. Beginning life on our screens as Stark's tolerant yet long-suffering PA, the pair's romance blossomed and she went on as much of a transformative journey as the tin man himself.

Gwyneth Paltrow was excellent in this role for the first few Iron Man films, providing in Potts a balance, reserve and sense of subtlety that played well against Robert Downey Jr's cocky, entitled "billionaire playboy philanthropist" Stark. However, Paltrow allowed her disinterest in the role to seep into her performance, appearing less and less and pulling less weight each time.

Her malaise with acting is well documented, and in recent years she has preferred to focus on other things, like her ghost-written cookbooks and infamous Goop.

Unfortunately, this means Paltrow's much-anticipated return for Infinity War and Endgame was unfortunately not the triumphant lap of honour many hailed it as, even with her own super suit. She let her increasingly sharp private persona bleed into the performance, with none of it ringing true – something that is especially crucial to nail when you have to perform a large green screen battle and watch your in-universe husband die...
