10 Most Overrated Sci-Fi Movies Ever Made

8. Back To The Future Part II (1989)

Films don't come much better in the more playful corner of the sci-fi pantheon than Back to the Future, while its two sequels filmed back-to-back were no slouch either. But the second entry in this franchise has only grown in stature over the last three decades; an odd phenomenon given that a cursory rewatch shows it really isn't up to the mark of Marty McFly's prior adventures.

The ambitious film takes the Hill Valley kid and eccentric mentor Doc Brown thirty years into the future, before a return to a dystopian 1985 sets alarm bells ringing. From there, they head back to 1955 and riff off previous scenarios from the original movie.

While Avengers: Endgame made great entertainment out of this latter gimmick, Marty's return to his parents' youth didn't mine such potential the way it could have - and by its finale, there's a sense of staidness setting in that's hard to ignore (albeit one that Part III would resoundingly sweep aside.)

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
