10 Most Overrated Sci-Fi Movies Ever Made
9. Zombieland (2009)
The zombie subgenre of horror and sci-fi is one of the most consistently skewered in the book and Ruben Fleischer's 2009 effort, penned by future Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, proves no different in tackling its conventions with a savvy self-awareness from the word go, assembling gags and gore galore as it forges through its own post-apocalyptic world.
Except the idea of a group of effective quasi-strangers - or at the very least, individuals who can't stand each other for one reason or another - banding together on a journey through the horde had already been deployed better half-a-decade prior in Edgar Wright's genre-bending Shaun of the Dead, a film which managed to convey more heart and heft on the whole.
In fact, save Bill Murray's glorious late-act cameo, Zombieland just doesn't quite measure up like it should; a notion only further reinforced by its sequel Double Tap last year, which riffed on most of the same gags. Its lead foursome have chemistry to spare - but like Deadpool in its wake, there's an undercurrent of smugness at points that just kicks the legs out, undercutting its more genuine moments of comedic potential.
