10 Most Overrated Sci-Fi Movies Ever Made

7. Little Shop Of Horrors (1986)

Starting life as a Roger Corman black comedy in 1960, before earning a second life as an off-Broadway musical, Frank Oz's Little Shop of Horrors adapted the latter to gloriously camp effect, telling the tale of a nebbish flower shop assistant who inadvertently nourishes a bloodthirsty man-eating plant into full-bloom in this sci-fi horror work.

It earned critical raves for the most part and all these years later it remains a cult favourite - but the actual subject of its quality is up for debate, due to its significant deviations come the final reel, which saw the film eschew the darker ending of the stage production in favour of a more upbeat finale after test screenings reacted negatively.

Its effective modus operandi - as a black comedy that shies away from the true inkiness at its heart - feels almost willfully quaint now, and something of a missed opportunity. Many hope that an upcoming remake, reportedly starring Taron Egerton, Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans, will faithfully stick to the original source and keep its extraterrestrial grisliness intact.

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
