10 Most Overrated Sci-Fi Movies Ever Made
6. Never Let Me Go (2010)
Released on the festival circuit in 2010 before moving onto a wider release the following year, Mark Romanek's adaptation of Sir Kazuo Ishiguro's acclaimed Booker Prize-nominated novel has swelled over the subsequent decade to become something of a small cult favourite - but compared to the work it's based upon, it just isn't quite as up to snuff as it could be.
Despite a screenplay from future Ex Machina and Annihilation filmmaker Alex Garland and a trio of well-studied lead performances, it arguably plays its hand too early in making its big reveal, something from which it can be debated the film never recovers - and thereafter struggles to really hit home with the waterworks it seems to crave under its ethical questioning.
There's a lot to love about it - Andrew Garfield and Carey Mulligan are excellent and Rachel Portman's score is an unsung gem - but compared to the reputation it's gradually fostered since, it's not quite as deftly affecting as it is thought to be, more turgid than tragic at points in its execution (though arguably the complexities of the novel are as much to blame as the film itself).
