10 Most Overrated Sci-Fi Movies Ever Made

3. Men In Black (1997)

Men In Black
Columbia Pictures

Last year's fourth installment in the Men in Black franchise was something of a soggy misfire for all involved, at least according to the critics who mangled it and the audiences who didn't really turn up. But nor was MIB: International necessarily having to match up to an outrageously high bar if a cursory rewatch of the original entry is anything to go by.

Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith's sci-fi caper, based on the comic run of the same name, works best when letting its two stars bounce off each other - but after its initial flush of early delight, it struggles to recapture that early spirit for the second and third reels of the film, despite the efforts of its leading duo, as it bounces around trying to relocate that zest.

The two sequels that followed starring both men are undoubtedly not overrated - but this maiden effort doesn't particularly make this look good like remembered, too scattershot in its aim to truly convince us of its consistent quality. For a comedy, that's dangerous territory.

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
