10 Most Overrated Sci-Fi Movies Ever Made

4. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

Ever since Disney began their expansion of the Star Wars cinematic universe - with both the long-awaited sequel trilogy and their anthology film series - die-hards of a galaxy far, far away have struggled to agree on pretty much any entry to date (though critics have only seriously soured on one film of the five released, last year's closing chapter The Rise of Skywalker).

But if there's one that is more overhyped than strictly divisive, it's likely the first non-Skywalker Saga entry in the book, the gritty quasi-prequel Rogue One. Set in the immediate hours leading up to the original film almost forty years prior, it's got all the ingredients to click as a genuinely different take on Star Wars lore - new planets, new players and a nostalgic affection, this time for old war movies more than swashbuckling matinee features.

That's why it's something of a bummer that it struggles to convey the heart or heft of its fellow chapters throughout, despite some top-notch production work and a talented cast. Few of its players really register the way they should - and though it makes some bold creative choices, it often feels choppy and indistinct in key parts. Critics mostly thought the Force was with this one - but it's just out of reach.

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
