6. Witch On The Wardrobe - The Conjuring (2013)

The Conjuring Bathsheba
New Line Cinema

Alongside Insidious, the Conjuring series has been one of the tentpole franchises of the horror industry over the past decade-and-a-half.

The first film in the series takes place in the '70s, when paranormal investigators Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed (Patrick Wilson, again!) Warren take a case at the Perron household -- a secluded farmhouse, where a malevolent presence has awoken. At its core, the film is a haunted house flick, and offers the kind of by-the-book jump-scares we've come to expect from mainstream horror, with just enough entertainment factor to justify the price of admission.

However, The Conjuring does have one or two cleverly conceived scenes and shots that give the film's villain -- the witch Bathsheba -- a terrifying build-up. And there is no part more fitting of this description, nor worthy of a good ol' pausing, than the wardrobe scene. In the dark of night, the Perron daughters hear a disturbance around their wardrobe, and while one goes to investigate, the other hangs back just the right distance to spy what's actually in store, giving an audience-baiting gasp that sets up the next shot: a quick pan up and then zoom in on Bathsheba squatting on top.

But she's only there for a few frames; better get her before she's gone!
