1. Dark Bilbo

The Lord of the Rings is filled with many terrifying creatures including Wargs, the Balrog, Shelob, and hordes of Orcs. However, the moment that scares first-time viewers the most tends to be when Bilbo Baggins reunites with his nephew, Frodo, while in Rivendell. As Frodo changes his top, Bilbo sees the One Ring and is instantly seized by an urge to reclaim it. As he lunges for the Ring of Power, his face distorts until he resembles the previous ringbearer, Gollum.

Even though we've seen the Master Ring compel Bilbo to act petty and jealous, we've never seen him become so corrupted by its dark powers until this moment. There is little build up to it and he returns to normal a second later, which makes his momentary metamorphosis all the more unsettling. It's even creepier since its the only jump-scare in the nine-hour trilogy.

Even though it lasts for a fraction of a second, it's one of the most memorable moments in any of the Middle-Earth adaptations. Nevertheless, it hasn't stopped fans rewatching and rewinding the moment over and over to see Bilbo at his most petrifying.
