6. Aragorn Deflecting The Dagger

The first instalment of LOTR concludes with the Uruk-Hai captain, Lurtz, mortally wounding Boromir. Before Saruman's lackey has a chance to put Boromir out of his misery, Aragorn intervenes, initiating a fight. It's a scuffle that doesn't even last a minute, but it's a highlight of the film due to its brutal and precise choreography.

However, the one moment that stands out is when Lurtz hurls a dagger at Aragorn, who deflects it with his sword. Despite the fact The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy story filled with goblins and trolls, some viewers took umbrage with this moment, saying it was unrealistic to deflect an oncoming dagger in such a way.

But here's the thing. The actor, Viggo Mortensen, actually did it! What's more impressive is he didn't mean to! The actor portraying Lurtz, Lawrence Makoare, was meant to throw the dagger, which was a real blade, to the side of his co-star. Because of his heavy prosthetics, Makoare couldn't see clearly and accidentally threw his weapon directly at Mortensen. Luckily, Mortensen instinctively knocked the dagger away, narrowly avoiding a potentially grisly injury.
