10 Most Paused MonsterVerse Moments

When it was announced around 10 years ago that Hollywood was planning to have another crack at making a Godzilla movie, the reaction was somewhat mixed. The utterly disastrous 1998 Roland Emmerich film was still fresh in the minds of audiences, but there was a feeling that lessons had been learned with the hiring of Monsters’ director Gareth Edwards.

Nevertheless, Legendary studios remained cautious with the project, not wanting to commit to creating an expanded MonsterVerse in case the movie flopped critically and/or commercially. As a result, 2014’s Godzilla is a much more contained, standalone story, with very few hints towards potential sequels and spin-offs starring other famous Titans.

That didn’t stop the filmmakers from throwing in a couple of cool easter-eggs, however. The most notable of which wasn’t noticed by most audiences until the pause button was at their disposal. In the scene where Ford Brody, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, returns to his abandoned home in Japan, we get a brief close up of a neglected bug tank with an abnormally large cocoon inside. The tag on the side of the tank reads “MOTHRA”, in reference to the fan-favourite classic Godzilla character.

Back in 2014, this moment was a big deal for audience members who could only dream of a franchise featuring their favourite monsters. Mothra would of course go onto to a play a significant role in the sequel, albeit her origin had nothing to do with the bug tank from the first movie.
