10 Most Polarising Films Of The Decade (So Far)
6. Birdman
When Michael Keaton's Birdman was nominated for Best Picture at the 2015 Oscars, there were many clamouring for it to win, but an equal number wondering how it was up for the accolade in the first place.
There was no middle ground. You were either bowled over by its one-take cinematography and pointed social commentary about the arts, or left unmoved by its cranky, out-of-touch protagonist.
Budding filmmakers were won over by its sweeping lone-camera POV wizardry, but just as many cried gimmick, style over substance and pretension.
While there's no denying that Keaton brings weight to the role of washed-up film star Riggan Thomson, his plight as a struggling artist seeking relevance at the tail end of his career is one only part of the audience could empathise with.
