4. The Cabin In The Woods

The Cabin In The Woods is a gem of a horror movie, and it perfectly balances its creepy setting and ghouls, with self-awareness and meta references and nods to the horror genre. It's both a love letter to the genre and one of its biggest critics, shining a spotlight on all the clichés horror fans love to hate.

The plot is lifted from a horror movie for dummies guide; five friends isolated in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, a creepy cellar filed with all sorts of supernatural and occult artefacts, and a sinister evil force hell bent on the group's demise. The big difference, however, is that their fate is orchestrated by a shadowy organisation that have planned every step.

The group don't want to split up in classic horror fashion? Pump a chemical in to the cabin to alter their decision making. Some of the survivors are going to escape? Rig a tunnel to explode, trapping them. The organisation even have a betting pool on which creature the teens will release upon themselves.

The Cabin in the Woods is filled with more nods to horror tropes that fans of the genre will appreciate, and even those who don't consider themselves horror connoisseurs will find a lot to love.
