7. Laundry Folding Machine - The Mangler (1995)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Qa-bhIuQQE "It folded her like a sheet, Mark!" Not just any machine, but a laundry folding machine! And you're probably thinking, why did the filmmakers decide that a laundry folding machine was the best machine choice for a horror movie? First of all, it's fixed in position, which isn't exactly scary. Second of all, the world "laundry" is involved. But here's another one straight from the twisted mind of Stephen King, who wrote this thing as a short story back in the '70s, and wrenched it out for reasons unknown in '95. Is it supposed to be a metaphor for capitalism? Is it a ripe parody of endless other "inanimate object" flicks? Whatever it is, The Mangler is one of the dumbest horror movies of the '90s, though B-movie aficionados are sure to find some pleasure in its corny one-liners and ridiculous death scenes. The plot is standard: a demon has possessed a laundry folding machine (sigh) and is using it to kill folk, so a bunch of people decide to get to the bottom of it, which is mainly achieved by having them standing near the Mangler and getting pulled in.
