10 Most Ridiculous Horror Movie Plot Twists
2. Scream 2 (1997) - Mrs. Loomis' Master Plan
The penultimate entry on this list should be prefaced by saying that Scream 2 is a fantastic movie and a staple of the slasher genre. Its plot-twist is one of the few on this list that is intentionally far fetched, making it perfect in context.
After a brutal opener, featuring the return of the first movie’s Ghostface Killer, we follow returning protagonist Sidney Prescott. Now at college, Sidney must grapple with a maelstrom of attention from the media and her fellow students in the wake of Ghostface’s return. At a party, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (or rather actress Sarah Michelle Gellar in another role) is murdered, bringing on the epiphany that the victims now being targeted have the same names as those murdered in Scream one.
More and more victims are claimed, and following an anxiety-inducing encounter with the killer in a crashed police car, Sidney races back to campus to find her boyfriend, Derek tied to a cross. As if this wasn’t dramatic enough, Derek’s new best friend, Mickey, steps out of the shadows, kills Derek, and reveals himself to be the man behind Ghostface’s mask.
Sure... great... solid twist – but they’re not done yet. Additionally, Mrs Loomis (the mother of the first movie’s antagonist) emerges and touts that this was all part of her master plan to get revenge on Sidney for the death of her son.
The whole scene is wrapped in a loveably goofy bow of melodrama (supplemented by a stage-set filled with fake lightning and crushing boulders) and the soapy commentary, bordering on parody, on horror sequels is nothing if not delightful.
