10 Most Ridiculous Moments In Spider-Man Movies
6. Paul Giamatti As The Rhino (The Amazing Spider-Man 2)
There are some Spider-Man villains who are never going to be the main antagonist in a movie; they're either too simple or too silly to carry the entire conflict of a story. However, placing some of these villains as side characters to the main conflict is a solid idea for inserting more recognisable faces into the movie, and Homecoming seems to be doing that with Shocker and Tinkerer underneath Vulture as the big bad.
However, when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 tried to do this with Paul Giamatti as The Rhino, it didn't end up working so well. Not because he's barely in the movie, or even because the film ends right as Spidey's big fight with him is about to begin; that's more the marketing's fault for placing the final shot of the movie in all of the trailers.
Rhino doesn't work because they've hired a great actor, wasted him by giving him nothing to do, and allowing him to perform with all of the restraint of a Saturday morning cartoon villain.
Giamatti's performance is ridiculous before he even acquires the Rhino suit, putting on the most preposterous of Russian accents whilst screaming and laughing like a madman. It all contributes to the overall tonal dissidence of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and to think what Giamatti might have done in the cancelled third film or the Sinister Six spin-off boggles the mind.
