When a director feels they need something different from an actor or perhaps the emotional stakes of a scene to be dialled up a little, more often than not they will deliver a note to said performer on the day that will help nudge them in the right direction.

However, when director Edward Zwick eventually realised that Jennifer Connelly wasn't as distraught as he needed her to be in the closing stages of Blood Diamond (2006), he decided to digitally alter her performance without her even knowing.

As Connelly's character Maddy Bowen talks to a dying Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) on the phone, she listens to him explain that he is 'exactly where (he's) supposed to be'. In this moment, a solitary tear can be spotted rolling down Connelly's cheek.

This wasn't something that she naturally produced on set in the moment, however. That single drop of human emotion was actually crafted on a computer and added to the scene later on in production.

In all honesty it doesn't actually change all that much about the scene as the two still brilliantly convey what each character is feeling at this emotional point in the movie without the CGI tear. So, we'll let you decide if it was really worth the hassle of digitally tweaking Connelly's performance without her consent just to hammer home that her character was feeling so very sad.
