Given that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was intently focused on T'Challa's (Chadwick Boseman) family grieving his untimely death, it didn't seem likely that any further losses would be incurred by his loved ones.

So quite the shock it was to see T'Challa's mother, Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), killed off at the end of the film's second act, when Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) launches an attack on Wakanda.

The attack leaves Ramonda and Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) trapped inside a flooded room, with Ramonda using the last remnants of her strength to swim Riri to safety, albeit while drowning herself.

Given Bassett's absolutely phenomenal performance as a grieving mother and scorned Queen throughout the film, it seemed damn-near certain that she'd survive, but instead her death only furthered Shuri's (Letitia Wright) own arc, now deprived of her father, brother, and mother.
