10 Most Shocking Snubs In The 2022 Oscar Nominations
7. Petite Maman - Best International Picture
A beautiful tale about a young girl coping with loss, French-language flick Petite Maman impressed many critics with British film titan Mark Kermode calling it his favourite film of 2021. Directed by CĂ©line Sciamma (known for the equally-snubbed Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Petite Maman is a wonderful little picture that seemed a dead cert for a "Best International Feature Film" nomination and possibly a victory too. And yet, nothing.
The film was left out entirely, not just by the Academy but by France who submitted Julia Ducournau's outlandish Titane as this year's submission. Titane was a worthy choice, but even that missed out on a nomination on the thirtieth anniversary of France's last "Best International Feature" win.
Titane was a worthy contender and has had its fair share of award nominations this year, but Petite Maman stood an equal if not better chance of getting on the shortlist. It did just that for the BAFTAs, where it is up for "Best Film Not in the English Language", a wordy-yet-worthy award.
Whilst Titane was a bolder and flashier film, Petite Maman has way more heart and that is why it should have gotten the edge in this particular race.
