10 Most Shocking Snubs In The 2022 Oscar Nominations
6. Caitríona Balfe - Best Supporting Actress
Star of popular TV show Outlander, Caitríona Balfe picked up a few Saturn Awards here and there but the big ones were just one Kenneth Brannagh away. She was cast by Lockheart in his semi-autobiographical black-and-white juggernaut Belfast as the mother of lead character, Buddy, known simply as "Ma".
"Ma" clearly resonated with most of the film industry as Balfe is waiting on BAFTA, SAG, and Critic Choice Awards decisions and also scored an unsuccessful nomination at the Golden Globes. Basically, anyone who was anyone nominated Balfe for her performance, so clearly you can count the Oscars as "not anyone".
Balfe missed out on a "Best Supporting Actress" nod, losing out to the likes of Kirsten Dunst, Ariana DeBose... and Judi Dench, Balfe's Belfast co-star. Dench - who famously won the same gong for appearing in Shakespeare in Love for eight minutes - cinched her eighth Oscar nomination this year, but aside from the Satellite Awards, Dench was not nominated for anything else for Belfast.
Caitríona Balfe may well feel robbed by losing out to her far more famous co-star and, knowing what the Oscars are like, she may well have a point.
