4. Seamus Confronts Harry - The Order Of The Phoenix

Poor Seamus Finnigan. He starts off as a fun side character with a tendency to blow things up. But all his comedic value is thrown away thanks to this scene at the start of the fifth movie.

Over the course of the summer holidays, Seamus and the rest of the wizarding world are bombarded with lies about Harry and Dumbledore. Despite knowing Harry for four years, Seamus then confronts him as soon as he enters the Gryffindor Common Room.

It’s the lack of build-up that makes this scene so embarrassingly poor. Unconcerned by the crowd of onlookers, Seamus accuses Harry of being a liar and justifies his beliefs by referring to the words of the Daily Prophet. There’s no doubt in Seamus’s voice at all – he’s totally convinced Harry is a liar.

In the book, there’s much more nuance. Seamus seems genuinely curious about what happened on the night of Cedric’s death, and the conversation becomes heated when Harry feels Seamus is being too intrusive.

Yet in the movie, this short scene feels like something out of a badly-written soap opera. Though Seamus does redeem herself later, it’s still hard to forgive the filmmakers for such a cringe-worthy scene.
