10 Most Sudden Deaths In Horror Movies You Never Saw Coming

4. Mina - The Rental

The Rental is certainly one of the more divisive mainstream horror films of the last few years, largely because it goes out of its way to leave the audience dissatisfied.

Two years before Barbarian made "Airbnb gone wrong" a genre in of itself, The Rental revolves around two couples who find themselves being stalked by a killer who is watching the remote house they've rented for the weekend.

Ultimately the killer takes the quartet out one-by-one until only Mina (Sheila Vand) is left, seemingly positioning her as the plucky Final Girl to fend the masked assailant off.

But that's not what happens, and yet her death doesn't technically come at the killer's hands either.

Right at the end of the movie, Mina flees from the killer through the nearby misty woods, but is unable to see what's in front of her and so runs straight off a cliff, falling into the rocky, watery depths below.

Given that Mina seemed like she'd be the one to defeat the killer or at least survive, this was a genuine surprise, even if combined with the killer's identity never being revealed it sent a lot of people home unhappy.
