Co-written and directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury, Inside (the pair’s feature debut) is a nail-biting and grotesque outing that takes the home invasion genre to a new extreme. And it all takes place on Christmas Eve, which technically makes it a Christmas movie.

Four months after the death of her husband, Sarah (Alysson Paradis) is due to have her baby on Christmas Day. Preferring to be alone, she rejects offers to spend the night with her mother and returns to her apartment.

However, Sarah isn’t as alone as she thinks. A mysterious intruder (Béatrice Dalle) breaks into her home and begins to torment her. For whatever reason, this woman wants Sarah’s unborn child and will stop at nothing to get it.

Another example of New French Extremity cinema, Inside is painfully brutal in its depictions of violence. Its bloody content more than matches the disturbing premise with many stomach-churning sequences being incredibly difficult to sit through.

Abject, nihilistic, and unfathomably cruel, Inside is the polar opposite of what you’d expect from a Christmas movie. Even the most hardened of horror fans will need a strong constitution to make it to the end credits of this one.
