Infinity Pool is the latest flick from Brandon Cronenberg, the son of the legendary David Cronenberg, and, let's just say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Cronenberg Jr wowed the horror scene with Possessor in 2020, but Infinity Pool has kept that ball rolling in 2023.
The film follows a man who vacations with his wife in the fictional country of La Tolqa. However, he soon becomes involved in an accident that lands him on the bad side of the country's government. This leads him into the palms of a surreal and perverse group of tourists who exploit the country's bizarre scientific breakthroughs and capital punishment customs.
Infinity Pool is a film that manages to have its cake and eat it too. It's deliberately slow-paced, but this gives way to some deplorable sequences that will leave you hiding behind a pillow in fright. Part of this comes from the terrifying sci-fi concepts, but there's also the horror of seeing the rich live out their hedonistic desires with no empathy.
Cronenberg's eye for visual storytelling and ability to subvert your expectations also massively up the horror. You'll never know what's coming next; all you do know is that it will be scary as hell.
