10 Most Underrated 1990s Sci-Fi Movies

1. Total Recall

Eraser movie
TriStar Pictures

Unlike many of the films on this list, Total Recall actually boasts a really good reputation. Released in 1990, the Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring classic received praise from fans and critics for its compelling plot and groundbreaking special effects and some rightfully consider it an all-time great. And yet, it never truly feels like it gets the respect that it deserves.

Be it Schwarzenegger's presence as an action star or the slightly aged/comedic effects, it's easy to write it off as one of the Austrian Oak's many action flicks of the '80s or, much worse, the less memorable ones from the '90s. However, the truth is that it's much more clever than its ever given credit for.

Its compelling plot raises complex questions about the inability to trust those closest to us because literally nothing is what it seems and it ultimately drives that home through Douglas Quaid's intense power struggle with those who corrupted his memory with fictional implants.

Yes; it's funny, quirky and action-packed, but all of that only underlines what is an incredibly intelligent movie that was every bit as revolutionary as the likes of Blade Runner and The Terminator franchise.
