10 Most Underrated 1990s Sci-Fi Movies

2. The Rocketeer

Eraser movie
Buena Vista Pictures

Every so often you'll come across a film that offered us so much more than it was actually given. Well, it goes without saying that The Rocketeer is one of those films.

Based on the comic book character of the same name, the film was released in 1991 to mildly positive reviews, but it never really made an impression audiences, barely making back its budget - with the planned sequels being scrapped as a result. Oh to think what they could have looked like.

A film that starred Bill Campbell, Jennifer Connelly, Alan Arkin and Timothy Dalton, it centers on a stunt pilot who unwittingly finds himself thrown into a push-and-pull conflict with evil forces after he comes across a prototype jetpack - something that inadvertently leads to him becoming the superhero known as The Rocketeer.

It's witty, theatrical and even a little campy, but that right there is where the film's charm lies. It's a lot of good old-fashioned fun - the kind of which you don't see enough of in movies nowadays - and even though all of the special effects don't hold up, it doesn't take away from this light-hearted adventure.

Here's hoping it finds new life on Disney Plus.
