10 Most Underrated 2000s Horror Movies
3. The Ruins
Surprisingly not as bad as the internet would've had you believe when it came out in 2008, The Ruins is the story of a group of tourists that travel to an ancient Mayan ruin whilst in Mexico, only to discover that instead of flashy pictures and daytime drinking, they've stumbled across an insidious evil lurking within the stone - and not all of them will be making it out alive.
The Ruins perfectly captures that strange space of summertime horror with its bright environments and well-lit scenery, making classically scary scenarios all the more intense as they're happening in broad daylight - that is, of course, until we're plunged into the opposite end of the spectrum by going underground.
It has creeping dread, all out gore, and a unique premise all wrapped up into one big dumb tourist package, and functions as a far better movie than you'd have guessed from the cover art alone. In short - The Ruins really is underrated, and will make you think twice about checking out the local flora next time you're on holiday.
