8. Professor Umbridge Imposes Her Will – The Order Of The Phoenix
The fifth Harry Potter book is a whopper. It’s the longest entry in the series with thirty-eight chapters and more than seven hundred pages. Adapting this huge story was a challenge for the filmmakers, and they were forced to make a lot of changes.
Whilst not all these changes were welcomed by the fanbase, others were more successful. In order to save time, the filmmakers decided to make a montage of Professor Umbridge’s villainous antics as she patrols the corridors and inspects the teachers. Imelda Staunton carries a sanctimonious smile throughout this little sequence, making her instantly hateworthy.
But the scene is also amusing thanks to the soundtrack and the reactions of the teachers. Professor Trelawney struggles to maintain her mystical composure, and Professor Snape doesn’t enjoy his inspection at all.
In just a couple of minutes, we witness Umbridge’s purge of the castle, and whilst there’s a lot more detail in the novel, the filmmakers deserve credit for showing so much in such a short amount of time.
