7. Lucius Malfoy Introduces Himself – The Chamber Of Secrets
The Malfoys are an unpleasant lot. The whole family are in Slytherin, and they have a nasty obsession with the purity of magical blood and the Darks Arts. Whilst Draco is the most irritating member of the family, his father is the most intimidating.
During a visit to Flourish and Blotts, Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys encounter Lucius Malfoy for the first time, and he stands out from the moment he enters the shop. After introducing himself to Harry, Lucius mocks the Weasleys' financial situation and sneers at Hermione's Muggle upbringing. He’s completely unfazed by the angry expressions of the people he’s talking to, and Jason Isaacs’ cold, snake-like delivery is delightfully evil.
This little scene is also integral to the plot, as Lucius deliberately drops Tom Riddle’s diary into Ginny’s cauldron. It’s almost impossible to spot this detail upon first viewing (particularly if you haven’t read the books), but it’s a fun thing to look out for during repeated viewings.
