Harry never enjoys the summer holidays, and in The Prisoner of Azkaban, his time with the Dursleys is made even worse by the arrival of Aunt Marge, an aggressive woman who enjoys alcohol, dogs, and bullying.

Following several glasses of brandy, Marge decides to insult Harry’s parents. Harry soon loses his temper, causing Marge’s glass to shatter, and after several more unpleasant comments about Harry’s mother, she starts to inflate like a giant balloon. Uncle Vernon then attempts to save his sister, but his comical attempts prove to be futile.

It’s been almost twenty years since this scene was made, yet the inflation of Harry’s dreaded aunt holds up remarkably well thanks to the use of practical effects. Actress Pam Ferris had to wear a massive inflatable suit for this scene, and though this wasn’t a pleasant experience for her, the discomfort she experienced was certainly worthwhile.

The decision to go practical was a wise move by the filmmakers. If they’d gone down the CGI route, the inflation of Aunt Marge would have dated horribly.
