6. Child's Play
With the success of Halloween and It, the door was open for other classic horror icons to return to the big screen with a new lease on life, pushed out the retirement home of direct-to-DVD trash to the tune of renewed success and the kerching of cash money.
Child's Play was supposed to bring Chucky back to the bright lights of Hollywood, but sadly it didn't ignite audience interest in the same way the return of Pennywise or Michael Myers did.
Box office isn't everything though, and this reboot was easily the best film the franchise has seen in years. Mark Hamill was the perfect choice to succeed Brad Dourif for a more modern incarnation of the killer doll, and it was clear the writers nailed the blend of horror and comedy that made the original films so enjoyable.
Considering this is essentially a big mainstream horror release, the deaths included are surprisingly grisly as well, with some genuinely wince-inducing highlights. The subject matter also remains in the realm of pitch black comedy, and the climax unleashes the full anarchic potential of the premise in a way that demands a sequel.
