Terrence Malick is probably one of the most divisive filmmakers at work today; in recent years, his pictures - The Tree of Life, To The Wonder - have split opinion. His latest film, Knight Of Cups, has followed suit, though the reception to this dazzling, experimental masterpiece does feel a lot more negative than usual.

"Underrated" is exactly the right choice of word to describe Knight Of Cups, then, a strange, unruly film about a screenwriter (played by Christian Bale) and his romantic adventures with six different women - and so much more. Malick wields Knight of Cups like a carousel, moving between genres, styles and stories; the Hollywood breakdown, the family saga, the Biblical odyssey - it's a heady rush of imagination.

For many, Knight of Cups proved narratively weightless and in need of more substance. Indeed, the lack of "story" was the number one criticism that the film attracted upon release. What many missed, however, is that the story is there - it's just a matter of reading between the lines and interpreting the images.

Because at first it's impossible to know what to make of the film you've just seen; before long, though, the vividness of it all comes flowing back and there is a sense of unfinished business. Malick's film essentially demands you return to it, where further viewings promise to expose hidden themes, messages and revelations that you almost certainly missed the first time around.

It's not a film for a single viewing; this is spectacular picture that requires a lot more time and effort than your average movie does.
