10 Most Underrated Movies Of 2017 (So Far)

2. The Circle

Transformers 5 Last Knight
STX Entertainment/EuropaCorp

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 15%

A 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes suggest something really inferior, a movie that the studio should go ahead and pay you to watch.

And yet The Circle, which stars Tom Hanks and Emma Watson and is based on the novel of the same name by acclaimed writer Dave Eggers, is nowhere near as awful as the reviews have made out. Seriously. It might be muddled, with a questionably sterile lead performance from Emma Watson, but 15%? No bloody way!

The problem that most critics seemed to have with The Circle stemmed from the fact that it feels dated and without a point, that it lacked purpose. These criticisms hold some weight, especially since The Social Network - a movie made ten years ago - still feels more relevant. But that doesn't mean The Circle has nothing to offer, especially because so much of the hate levelled at the film feels misplaced.

Because there are a ton of interesting ideas at work here, and many of them - the most notable of which hones in on social media as a form of constant surveillance, a world in which your entire life is broadcast live for everyone to see - are explored to chilling effect. We see how a new facade of technology works, and how it ruins lives. What's more, The Circle is actually pretty absorbing and you genuinely want to keep watching to see what happens next.

Also: Tom Hanks as an actual bad guy!

And to criticise the characters in the film for being soulless, and the film itself for feeling manufactured and thin? Ever wondered whether these were decisions made entirely purpose, almost as if it were - wait for it - the entire point?
